Switch still on radar for champs
BROADBEACH have not given up hope of entering Football Queensland’s mooted SEQ women’s competition after putting the exclamation mark on a season of local dominance yesterday.
The newly crowned champions made it 14-straight wins in the Gold Coast Women’s Premier League with a 1-0 defeat of arch rivals Southport at Nikiforides Park, with their next assignment a September 2 grand final against the Warriors or Robina.
Broadbeach had been linked to a new SEQ women’s league featuring teams from Brisbane and the Coast in preseason, but the concept did not get off the ground.
However, with the idea still on the table at FQ, Dolphins coach Sarah Evans said the club remained open to testing themselves against some of the region’s best clubs.
“From a personal point of view, I’d be open to that,” Evans said.
“We put it to the girls at the start of this season … and the hands were raised and that’s when we said we’re going to do it then. (But) this season was very disjointed obviously with Comm Games, nobody really knew who was in what league … if that kind of thing is happening again then we’ve got to look at.
“We want to play football in an organised league, a sustainable league that is competitive across all levels.”
Robina warmed up for this weekend’s preliminary final showdown against Southport with a 4-0 victory over Musgrave yesterday.
