WORLD TITLE WITHIN REACH FOR IRONMAN DAY

GOLD Coaster Ali Day stands on the cusp of becoming the inaugural winner of the World Ironman series after emerging from the opening day of individual racing with a lead in the elite men’s field.

With the order of racing switched to accommodat­e team events on the opening night of competitio­n on Friday, the individual accumulato­r competitio­n began under lights on Saturday night at Finns Beach Club, Bali.

Surfers Paradise ironman Day emerged with eight points to lead fellow Gold Coasters Matt Bevilacqua (Kurrawa, 7), Shannon Eckstein (Northcliff­e, 6), Matt Poole (Kurrawa, 5), and Hayden White (Currumbin, 4), followed by Gold Coast product and former ironman champion Ky Hurst (3), Kendrick Louis (2) and Zane Holmes (1).

The inaugural World Ironman winner will be crowned early this morning Australian time. Noosa’s Jordan Mercer led the women’s division.

Earlier, Gold Coasters Courtney Hancock, Eckstein, White and Georgia Miller won the teams division.
