Puerto Rico too strong for Cougars at worlds
THE Gold Coast Cougars have been eliminated from the Little League World Series in the US after a 6-0 loss to Puerto Rico’s Radames Lopez.
The Caribbean region champions were too strong for the Australians, scoring three runs in the third innings and adding another three across the fourth and sixth innings.
Oscar Hyde, who hit a home run in the loss to Mexico in the Cougars’ world series opener, gained their only hit, a single, in the fourth innings.
The action unfolded with coach Klae Calvert in the stands after he picked up a suspension
WE LOST THE GAME, BUT DO YOU KNOW WHAT … YOU GUYS NEED TO HOLD YOUR HEADS UP HIGH COUGARS MANAGER BRENT IDDON
earlier this year after one of his players did not have an at-bat during a match.
The player was Calvert’s son Thomas, 9, and while the error was due to a miscalculation, it violated Little League Baseball’s “mandatory play rule”, meaning Calvert senior was forced to watch the world series from the stands as Brent Iddon stood in as manager in Williamsport.
Iddon was recorded giving a pep talk to the Cougars after the opening loss to Mexico.
“The result doesn’t matter,” Iddon said after the 3-2 loss.
“We lost the game, but do you know what … you guys need to hold your heads up high. No one’s failed here.”
The Cougars next play New England tomorrow morning (Australian time).
