Sevens ace Dick adds muscle to Griffith Uni

- CONNOR O’BRIEN

GRIFFITH University have secured a major coup in signing Lily Dick from Aon Uni Sevens Series reigning champions University of Queensland for the 2018 season.

With Georgie Friedrichs joining Dick in being announced for the Southport campus, Griffith will be the only squad to feature two current students as their elite players.

Dick, who hails from Currumbin and attended Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School in Tweed, secured an Australian development contract on the back of her efforts in the 2017 Aon Series.

“The first week (with the national squad) was a massive step up but you gradually get used to the workload and the skill requirement, and then you bring this knowledge and skills back to your state,” said the 18-year-old.

Friedrichs, 23, has been in the national sevens set-up since 2016 but missed last year’s Aon Series due to an ankle injury.

Both marquees are students in Griffith’s business school, much to the delight of the university’s Sports College director Duncan Free.

“It is a real statement about the university’s commitment to and support for elite athletes who want to combine top level competition and academic studies,” Free said.

Griffith’s squad has been pieced together with the help of Colleges Knights and Sunnybank.
