Tough new laws deliver jail terms for revenge porn

-

SHARING or threatening to share intimate images of someone without their consent will attract a jail sentence of up to three years under new laws to be introduced into State Parliament tomorrow. Refusing to take down or delete the images will also be an offence attracting a jail sentence of up to two years under the changes, signed off by Cabinet yesterday.

Attorney-General Yvette D’Ath said the laws – an election commitment – would send a message that engaging in revenge porn was not OK and “will have serious consequences”.

Ms D’Ath said the laws would define what an intimate image entailed.

“If it is clear it is an intimate image of the person and they have not given their consent for that image to be shared to other people or put on a public website or social media, then that will be an offence,” she said. “It will also be an offence to threaten to share that image, even if it doesn’t exist.”
