CAN we please see some action from the Queensland State Government and Gold Coast City Council regarding saving our koala habitat corridors, which continue to disappear before our eyes along with koala numbers?

Circulating tragic images of koalas, who normally get all their hydration from eucalyptus trees, left with no option but to risk life and limb crossing busy highways to reach puddles in suburban gutters for a drink is enough to make one weep.

Accolades to the good Samaritans setting up drinking stations in bushland for our native wildlife doing it tough and our little Aussie battler being hounded into extinction by the inaction, indecision and disinterest of government.

With bonuses paid, compliments mouthed, backslapping tolerated and smiley pictures in albums, how about doing something for this vulnerable marsupial?

Milked for the almighty tourist dollar during the Commonwealth Games but now out of the limelight, forgotten, struggling to survive and still waiting delivery of the promised Borobi Reserve. CHRIS, SURFERS PARADISE

THANKS to Burleigh MP Michael Hart for voicing residents’ concerns about the light rail extension. Mayor Tate’s claims that residents just want to “get on” with the light rail ignore the views of many who don’t want to open our suburb to massive highrise development, lose the village atmosphere, threaten the livelihood of small business during construction or further endanger the threatened local koala population. Following the alternative inland route doesn’t compromise the character and lifestyle of the southern Gold Coast.

According to Mayor Tate, our city plan is focused on “building the city up, not out, so we forever preserve our magical green space”. I suspect that building up, not out, will not benefit our magical green spaces as much as it will benefit highrise developers.

Council should remember that supposedly they work for us. We don’t have to stand by and accept their version of our city’s future. MERRIDY WEBSTER, BURLEIGH HEADS REVELATIONS that more than $80 million left in the Commonwealth Games contingency fund is likely to go back to Treasury coffers is just more evidence of Annastacia Palaszczuk short-changing the Gold Coast. These shocking revelations come on the back of delays on important infrastructure upgrades on the M1 and Second M1.

A reduction in local police at the same time crime continues to soar and bikie gangs are back on the coast.

And it comes as bikie gangs expand their territory and peddle drugs like ice to our kids.

This is not good enough and the Gold Coast deserves better.

This is money that could go towards installing airconditioning in

every state school classroom for Gold Coast kids and teachers, bust congestion by fast-tracking a second M1 or improve patient care by slashing waiting times at the Gold Coast University Hospital.

It’s money that was set aside for the Gold Coast and it’s money that should be spent on the Gold Coast.

Anything less than that is just another arrogant move from an arrogant Labor Government.

The LNP is the only party that will always stand up for the Gold Coast and fight to ensure local residents get their fair share. DEB FRECKLINGTON, LNP LEADER

I’M sitting reading the paper on a lovely sunny morning looking at the Broadbeach carousel.

Why would anyone want to remove it. Not only does it bring joy but money for charity.

Very mean and short sighted. JUDY QUIGLEY, VICTORIA

WANTING to extend a big thankyou to the people of Mudgeeraba and the surrounding areas for reducing their reliance on disposable nappies. The people who have chosen to use Mon’s Nappy Service instead of disposables, especially those on tank water, have discovered an easy, cost-effective way to help save our planet, water and time, as well as eliminating the negative side effects of using disposables. Not only is the service cheaper than buying disposable nappies, it is more convenient. MONIQUE WHITE
