The Gold Coast Bulletin

Details of teen’s bail conditions unknown

- LEA EMERY lea.emery@news.com.au

THE teenager accused of trying to rape a female jogger and attacking other women in a Varsity Lakes park has been granted bail.

However, the Bulletin is unable to report what the teenager’s bail conditions are because it was again denied access to the Southport Children’s Court.

The denial was given despite the fact half the charges the teenager faces were committed as an adult.

The 18-year-old is alleged to have terrorised women in the Varsity Lakes parkland for 14 months.

He is charged with offences including assault attempting to commit rape and three counts of indecent acts.

The teenager was 17 when three of the six offences occurred, meaning his matter is being heard in the Children’s Court which is closed to the public.

Last week, the Bulletin and other Gold Coast media applied to cover the juvenile charges on the grounds of public interest. It was denied by Magistrate Louise Shephard.

Yesterday, the Bulletin tried to access the teenager’s bail application in the Children’s Court.

The Bulletin has argued the matter is in the interest of the public due to the seriousness of the offences.

It was denied by Magistrate Kay Philipson.

The teenager’s name has been legally suppressed.

The media is only allowed to cover the man’s most recent charges, after he turned 18, which include an indecent act in public at a Varsity Lakes Park on July 14.

The adult matters were yesterday heard in the closed Children’s Court.

The teen was allegedly caught masturbating in front of a female jogger. He was also charged with possession of dangerous drugs and possession of utensils.

The matters have been adjourned to October 15.
