Ex-lover ran before shots

- LEA EMERY SAM WALLACE

THE woman at the centre of a “love triangle” shooting says she did not see the attack because she ran off “scared”.

Jhai Saric told the Supreme Court of Queensland at Southport yesterday she drove former boyfriend Anthony Yoon Sun Soong to the car park of Mike’s Kitchen at Merrimac on December 6, 2015 because she saw him armed with a gun.

Soong, 25, is accused of shooting former Big Brother contestant Sam Wallace in the thigh. Mr Wallace was in a car with best friend Joshua Milani, who days earlier had spent the night with Ms Saric.

Soong has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder or in the alternative committing a malicious act with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

That means, the jury of seven women and five men will be asked by the prosecution to find Soong guilty of one of the charges.

Ms Saric yesterday told the jury she ran away as soon as she pulled up at the restaurant.

When asked how she felt as she ran, Ms Saric simply said: “Scared”.

Ms Saric said prior to the shooting she agreed to meet Soong at a Merrimac shopping centre car park. The court heard when she arrived at the shopping centre, Soong got in her car. “He had a gun with him,” she said.

Ms Saric said Soong also took her mobile phone and called Mr Milani.

Mr Saric told the court she had broken up with Soong in November after about a 12month relationship.

She said she had been on a date with Mr Milani the Friday before the shooting.

Earlier, Mr Wallace told the court he felt like he was hit with a “sledgehammer” when he was shot.

Mr Wallace said he was sitting in the car and one of the bullets travelled through the car door, into his right thigh before lodging in his left thigh.

Mr Wallace said Soong let off four shots.

He said Soong then came to the car window and pointed the gun at him.

Mr Wallace said he heard a clicking sound.

“That’s probably a memory I will have every night,” he said.

Mr Wallace said Soong then came closer to the driver’s side window.

“After that I said ‘you proved your point, you got me’, that’s when he said, ‘take that as a warning’,” Mr Wallace told the court.

Soong has admitted to shooting Mr Wallace in the leg but it is contested that it was his intention to kill him.

The trial continues today.

THAT’S PROBABLY A MEMORY I WILL HAVE EVERY NIGHT.
