COACH WEIGHS UP FUTURE AFTER RELEGATION

- BRENT O’NEILL

TWEED United coach Jason Buchanan will weigh up his future following his side’s relegation from the Gold Coast Premier League but admits he has unfinished business with the Marlins.

Buchanan, who joined the club this season following the collapse of Gold Coast City, was left “gutted” on Tuesday night when a 2-1 loss to Southport in the Premier League playoff consigned the Marlins to a Coast League One return in 2019.

Double winners in last year’s Coast League, the Marlins registered just two wins and two draws in 18 Premier League fixtures this season to finish second from bottom.

Palm Beach resident Buchanan has already received multiple coaching offers for next year, but will take a week or two before deciding his next move.

“I just need to look at things and see what’s right for me … but I would have no problem staying at Tweed and helping the boys get back in the Premier League because I’ve enjoyed it and it’s a great little club. It does feel like unfinished business,” Buchanan said.

“Everybody was gutted (on Tuesday), from the players to the staff to the president. We never got relegated (in that game), we got relegated in the weeks before that. At the end of the day I don’t think Tweed United were ready for the Premier League.

“When they did get promoted, there was (meant to be) no promotion or relegation for two years and then that got changed.

“I almost feel like we were stitched up a little bit. I never thought I’d be coming into a relegation battle.”

Buchanan said he expected the nucleus of the side to remain at the club.
