Hoop duo showing off talents to Asia
FIRST thing is first: I may have been a touch critical of the Rollers’ efforts in the men’s QBL last week.
Call it the emotion of a general manager but, a week later, I realise the team making the finals for the first time in years was a huge effort.
The support of volunteers and sponsors took things to a new level and let’s hope it’s the start of even bigger things for basketball on the Gold Coast. Flynn Cameron and Callum Dalton both finished the under-18 FIBA Asia championships last week and distinguished themselves during the tournament.
Having been teammates for the majority of their junior rep teams culminating in four straight state championships and a slew of state and national team selections, the boys have continued their rise through the ranks. Callum has just signed with the Brisbane Bullets and Flynn is playing Division 1 college ball for DePaul University in the US.
Both are going to the world championships in 2019; Callum for Australia and Flynn for New Zealand.
The boys faced off against each other in the final of the Asian championships and New Zealand pushed Australia the whole way after being demolished in the pool games by the Aussies.
Flynn was named one of the tournament’s best, especially on the back of his massive triple-double – the only one of the tournament – in the semi-final.
Gold Coast Basketball has had a long time between drinks for a senior representative in the national team for basketball – Jenny Whittle was the last national player in the 90s.
These two young players look to be on the fast-track for achieving this.
