BROLLY GOOD WEATHER, BUT NOT FOR LONG

- BRITT RAMSEY AND PEYTON HUTCHINS

THE drenching parts of the Gold Coast received during the weekend came to a grinding halt overnight and the news isn’t good with little to no rain expected until next month.

Weatherzone meteorologist Kim Westcott said a large, slow moving low-pressure system had been responsible for the rain event.

“It started in the corner of WA last week and slowly moved across several states, and it’s hung around for a bit before pushing offshore,” she said.

“These systems are typical of what you’d see in spring or summer, not winter – so it’s a sign of things to come when it warms up completely.”

Temperatures will begin to warm up after yesterday’s coldest August day of 19C with low 20Cs during the week before 27C on Saturday.

Ella Blow and her grandmother Clare Williams spent their afternoon yesterday stomping in puddles as the weather cleared.

“It was the first time Ella could use her favourite umbrella all winter, so we were definitely going to get out of the house,” Mrs Williams said.

“We went to a dogfriendly cafe got takeaway coffees and went to the beach.

“Rain or shine, the Gold Coast is too beautiful to stay inside – we will make the most of the day, no matter the weather.

“Although I love our sunny days, the farmers could do with more rain – we could all do with more rain.”

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Lachlan Stoney said it was unlikely the rain would continue this week.

“Looking at the past few days we have seen some good rainfall totals,” he said.

“The rain band passing over the Gold Coast could bring more isolated showers, but this weekend was the only significant rainfall event we will see.”

Coolangatta copped a drenching with 60mm, the average monthly rainfall for the suburb falling in just three days. During the three days to Sunday, 57mm fell at Burleigh, Evandale received 68mm, and the Hinterland recorded 33mm.
