BROMFIELD SEALS SPOT IN LEAGUE FOLKLORE

- BRENT O’NEILL @Brent_ONeill

ROBINA City goalkeeper Mahalia Bromfield has gained a place in Women’s Premier League folklore after an incredible last-gasp penalty save against Southport in Saturday’s preliminary final.

With her side leading 1-0 in the 91st minute at Ashmore, the 22-year-old shotstopper dived full-stretch to her right to parry Emily Benton’s spot kick over the bar.

Having grabbed the ascendancy through a firsthalf strike from Abigail Taylor, the visitors then held on to book a grand final showdown away to unbeaten Broadbeach at 3pm on Sunday.

It is not the first time Bromfield has emerged as a penalty-saving heroine after steering Robina to the Premier League reserves title in her first season at the club in 2017.

“In the grand final, we were down 3-1 in the penalty shootout against Musgrave and I ended up saving three in a row and we won,” Bromfield, who moved to Robina from Melbourne in 2014, said.

“I was over the moon (after Saturday’s save). I was cheering with all the girls and then we realised the game wasn’t over and we still had a corner to defend.

“You do love those moments where someone knows you did help your team win. Those are the moments you dream of.”

Southport coach Trent Gregson paid credit to Bromfield. “Not many people save that,” he said.
