MINOR PREMIERS SAY TOP SPOT IS ONLY GOOD FOR A WEEK OFF
PALM Beach Currumbin senior coach Chad Owens says the minor premiership hasn’t guaranteed the side anything but a week off.
The Lions completed the regular season with a 17.17 (119) to 16.8 (104) win over Mt Gravatt at Salk Oval on Saturday to finish on top of the ladder before the finals.
They will enjoy a week off before playing the winning side from the qualifying final, to be played between Broadbeach and Morningside.
Palm Beach Currumbin will go into the finals having dropped just two games but the coach warned finals were a whole new ball game. He should know after guiding the Lions to last year’s premiership from second.
“It doesn’t matter if you finish first or fifth when it
comes to finals,” Owens said. “Once you’re in there you’re in with a chance.”
Broadbeach set out to secure second and a home final and the Cats did just that thanks to their 20.13 (133) to 7.4 (46) win over Labrador at Subaru Oval.
Coach Brett Andrews said the team took another step towards playing their best football against the Tigers.
“We have worked hard to get (second) and we got there,” Andrews said as the team prepares for their qualifying final against Morningside this Saturday.
Surfers Paradise sealed their place in the finals with a gritty 10.9 (69) to 7.6 (48) win over Western Magpies.
Scores were level at 33-33 at halftime before the Demons pulled away in the second half.
They play Mt Gravatt in an elimination final on Sunday.
