Robina pipped in wet, wild decider

-

A FAIRYTALE ending to the season wasn’t to be for Robina’s women’s team, who fell to Morningside by one goal in the QWFA Division 2 South decider at Yeronga yesterday.

Persistent rain created a slippery Leyshon Park and forced players to turn to soccer skills to gain ground in the scrappy match, which ended 2.4 (16) to 1.4 (10).

The ball spent most of the game in Robina’s forward 50 but Morningside’s defenders worked overtime to ensure the favourites could not capitalise.

Scores were locked at 7-7 at the long break, but an early goal in the third to Panther Mary Ross – the joint winner of the division’s top goal scorer with Roo Sarah Ellis – gave Morningside the ascendancy.

Roo Rhi Mathews effected plenty of clearances during the game, and teammates Meghan Purton, Sam Pinner and Courtney Millington were relentless at the stoppages.

Robina captain Hannah Blaine shone to collect the beston-ground medallion.

The Roos and the Panthers battled for top spot on the ladder all season, with both sides tipped to be promoted to Division 1 next year.
