Wet, wild but a whole lot of fun

-

A GOLD Coast man has modernised an old scout challenge, spending nearly 40 hours atop a 32-foot scissor lift, to raise money for the Ashmore Scout Troop, battling not only his fear of heights but the heaviest downpour the Gold Coast has seen in months.

Scout leader Steven Kennedy raised $2500 to send his troops to next year’s jamboree in Adelaide after perching himself on top of the lift at Ashmore Shopping Centre from Friday night to Sunday morning.

He braved the torrential weather armed with just a swag and umbrella.

“It was nerve-racking to start with, because we had a lot of (bad) weather,” he said.

“I questioned why I was doing this, I want to go home, I’m cold, I’m wet, I’m grumpy, I’m tired, I’m hungry … but you get over that, and it’s all about the fun times. This was fun.”

Mr Kennedy said he took inspiration from scout leaders who used to camp at the top of a tower built by scouts.
