BRETT WILKIE’S BOWLS:

- with Brett Wilkie

HELENSVALE have taken out the Complete Turf Renovations Gold Coast Tweed District men’s division 1 pennant title after defeating rivals Broadbeach in an exciting final.

Broadbeach started the better of the two teams, going out to an 11-shot lead 38-27.

In a high-quality, rain affected affair, Helensvale then staged a strong comeback to tie the scores at 38-all. Both teams traded blows until the scores were level again at 52, before Helensvale snuck away at the later stages of the game to lead by five going into the last end.

Jayden Christie then put the nail in the coffin by trailing the jack into the ditch and taking away any chance of Broadbeach scoring a five, with Helensvale victors 61-55.

Helensvale’s team of Matthew Lucas, Christie, Mark Casey and Nathan Rice dominated the dying stages of the game to help lift the Hawks over the line, as they were the only rink to win out of the three.

Broadbeach had earlier

defeated Tweed Heads in an extra-end thriller to make the final.

After being three down on the last end, Broadbeach’s Ryan Bester played two amazing bowls to claim three shots and force the extra end,

which they then dominated. Helensvale had previously defeated Broadbeach in the top-two playoff to advance to the final.

The victory completed a double for Helensvale, with the women’s division 1 team winning their title last week. The club was also the best performed in the men’s pennant competition, winning four flags out of 11 divisions.

Meanwhile, Tasmania’s Rebecca Van Asch has gone back-to-back in the Australian Indoor Singles at Tweed Heads Bowls Club, defeating local club favourite Chloe Stewart in the final.

Stewart staged a remarkable comeback after losing the first set, dominating the second set before losing in the tie break.

Former Ballina resident Aaron Teys took out his maiden men’s title after defeating Western Australian Clive Adams in the final.
