BIRTHDAY REVELRY FOR HAPPY GROUP
ESTABLISHED in 1982, the Currumbin Happy Group is celebrating its 36th birthday this month.
The club will also recognise the long contribution of founding members Mary Alexander, who recently celebrated her 90th birthday (pictured), and Dorothy Murphy, both of whom are retiring.
The group was formed by the Coolangatta Community Health Sisters so isolated and elderly people could come together for friendship and social contact.
The first meeting of the Happy Group saw 20 people attend, all bringing in useful items such as electric jugs, trays, plates and cups.
A local shop provided raffles and a Coolangatta shop donated two cakes.
Many founding members donated things such as a piano, tea urns, crockery and whatever was needed to get the club up and running.
The voluntary workers still provide the same selfless service to this day, including transport for those who cannot drive.
The Currumbin Happy Club meets on Tuesdays at 9am at the Elanora Uniting Church.
