Hornets, Redbacks locked in a promotion race

- – CONNOR O’BRIEN

HELENSVALE have begun laying the foundations for a top-tier Rugby League Gold Coast side as the race for promotion heats up.

Plenty of interest has already been shown to take the spot in A-grade vacated by Tweed Heads, who have opted to pull out of the competition in 2019 to mirror the model deployed by most regional Intrust Super Cup clubs.

Mudgeeraba believe they are ready, with a possible change of scenery in 2020 able to financially underpin an Agrade entry.

The Hornets signalled their promotion hopes before the current season had even begun and president Wayne Court confirmed it’s still their plans.

Court plans to meet with RLGC head honchos after the season concludes in mid-September. “We’re keen,” he said.

“At the moment we are just out talking to people about sponsorship. We have got a few people on the go and I have got some players there that are keen as well if it goes ahead.

“I am just waiting for them to say ‘yes, you’re OK to do it’.”

However, he acknowledged the possibility they may have to wait an extra 12 months to get the green light.

Finances, junior memberships and performance are understood to be among the key criteria to earn promotion.

Both the Hornets and Redbacks have an abundance of juniors coming through the ranks but the latter have enjoyed a stronger 2018 on the field.

Helensvale though currently have a home park more suitable to hosting A-grade fixtures, with the ability to take gate receipts.
