Iced Vovos for breakfast? This Broadbeach cafe is making it happen,

SPRING has sprung and, while the dreary weather isn’t much to go by, there’s another sure sign. You could set your clock by the seasonal menu debut at Elk Espresso, which has a reputation for setting the taste trends.

While Gold Coast diners can thank the Broadbeach cafe for the likes of green bowls and breakfast gnocchi, their newest superstar is all about nostalgia.

Every nana’s favourite biscuit, the Iced Vovo, has been captured in fine-dining detail — coconut ice cream, raspberry gel, Ruby chocolate, raspberrie­s, pretzel soil, strawberry jelly and white chocolate pearls sitting pretty on waffles. If your vice is fried chicken, the guilty pleasure has found its way on to eggs benedict, along with sauteed kale, salted pepitas, rockmelon spheres, chipotle hollandais­e and pomegranat­e gloss.

Satisfy your sweet, savoury, spicy and salty cravings in one go with the harrisa jam and goat’s cheese scrambled eggs, served on buttery brioche with heirloom tomatoes and shaved green asparagus.

The Spring Fling is one of three new bowls, brimming with apple lime sorbet, pineapple jelly, toasted puffed grains, vanilla bean yoghurt, fresh fruit and citrus sherbet, and totally gluten-free.

To help you choose a brew to match, Elk Espresso will open up an event usually reserved for baristas. There are limited places available at a coffee cupping event on September 19 at 5.30pm.

“It’s our first ever coffee cupping open to the public,” owner Andrew Whiting says.

“Learn more about coffee and be trained in the art of cupping by the lady who sources all the coffee from the farms direct for Single O.”

WAFFLING ON

Iced Vovo waffles may be just the thing for spring, but there’s another sweet surprise down the road. The Loose Moose, also in the Oasis Shopping Centre, has a homage to the Golden Gaytime on its breakfast menu. The tribute consists of crispy buttermilk waffles (on a paddle pop stick, no less), salted caramel sauce, Gaytime-flavoured labneh, white chocolate soil, shortbread, Gaytime ice cream, maple syrup and strawberri­es.
