Weyer back in national mix
COREY Weyer has secured his place in the 20-member Kookaburras team for the upcoming Darwin International Hockey Open and two Tests against Argentina.
The world No.1 side will compete against Argentina (No.2), Malaysia (12th) and Japan (16th) from September 18-22 at Marrara Hockey Centre in Darwin.
Australia will also play 2016 Rio Olympic Games gold medallists Argentina in two further Tests.
The matches are all crucial preparation for the Kookaburras leading into the 2018 World Cup in Bhubaneswar, India, starting in November when Australia will defend their world title.
The selection of Gold Coast talent Weyer is another tick for his development after the 22- year-old narrowly missed a spot in the team for the Commonwealth Games in April.
Murwillumbah’s Dylan Wotherspoon also earned selection in the squad.
Uncapped 22-year-old Victorian defender Josh Simmonds, Queenslander Jacob Anderson and Tasmanian Jack Welch have all been called up to make their debuts.
“Every selection has its challenges and this one is no exception,” Kookaburras coach Colin Batch said.
