Syringes found at The Spit

-

A COOMERA man was “horrified” to discover two used syringes on a popular Southport beach yesterday morning after nearly treading on one with bare feet.

David Kellerher was walking his dog at The Spit at 10.30am when to his horror spotted the potentially dangerous needle. He disposed of it, only to find a second one a short distance away.

“Who knows if there are more just sitting under the sand?” he said.

“There are so many kids and families that play here, it is just harrowing to think what could have happened.”

Mr Kellerher, who visits The Spit every morning to walk his dog said he wanted people to be aware.

“The needle on one of them was bent so it looks as though it could have already been stood on,” he said.

“I dread to think of the ordeal you would go through if you were to step on one of these syringes.”

Used syringes could be contaminated with hepatitis B and C, as well as the HIV virus.

Council has provided more than 400 sharps disposal units or safe sharps bins in public toilets and at other locations.
