Cops dig deeper for body

- JACK HOUGHTON

THE search for the remains of Sydney mother Lynette Dawson will continue today as police dig deeper into the backyard of a home more than 36 years after she vanished.

Forensic teams swarmed the quiet suburban enclave at first light yesterday to resume sifting through buckets of soil with gloved hands.

Other officers placed excess concrete into buckets after power tools cut it free and hauled the load down the snaking driveway towards a waiting media pack.

It was painstakingly slow and meticulous work which, was documented at every step by the forensic team who are working to bolster a brief of evidence against Lyn’s former husband, Chris Dawson.

Everything uncovered, including the several rock “anomalies” which indicate the land had been disturbed, will be added to a lengthy bundle of evidence before the DPP.

Mr Dawson, a former teacher, now lives on the Gold Coast. Two coroners found he likely killed his wife, but he has always maintained his innocence and has never been charged. Not long after her disappearance Mr Dawson moved a student he had been having an affair with into the family home at Bayview.

Homicide Squad Commander Detective Superintendent Scott Cook said that his team would dig until they hit bedrock, which is believed to be 4m below the surface.

“It is a complex block of land because it is largely rock and so digging is not easy,” he said. “We have radar penetration looking at the ground ... there is a lot of work that has been done here.”

The search will last for at least another four days.
