Billy’s left cross again by latest backflip bid

- RHYS O’NEILL

ONE of the Gold Coast powerbrokers burned by Daly Cherry-Evans’ infamous backflip has labelled contracts “a joke” but backed the Titans to withstand another recruiting mess.

Fans are still not over the 2015 Cherry-Evans saga in which the Manly playmaker reneged on his Titans deal.

It’s an eerily similar scenario now with Panthers recruit Tyrone Peachey, who has confirmed his “jitters” last month are now at the point he has reportedly asked his manager to back out of his Titans deal.

Gold Coast businessman Billy Cross played a small role in helping orchestrate thirdparty deals within the rich contract for Cherry-Evans, meaning he was one of many to be left with a bitter taste in his mouth after the backflip.

With Peachey threatening another ugly repeat, Cross revealed why the Titans can survive – again.

“The club is bigger than any single player,” he said yesterday.

“The Titans have had a great season off the field and have come a long way.

“It is unfortunate that Peachey is looking to get out of his deal but the club will move on regardless.

“It’s great that the club is being strong about it and said to him ‘imagine what would happen if we wanted to break our deal’.”

Cross, though, admitted he was left somewhat bitter after the Cherry-Evans drama.

“We worked pretty hard to get that deal,” he said.

“It was what it was in the end but obviously it would have been great to work out a bit better. Contracts are a bit of a joke these days.”
