WHAT IS A GLOBAL TOURISM HUB?

It’s a resort development offering a wide range of facilities including world-class entertainment options. The Coast proposal would likely cost $3 billion, be on a large site, offer top-end accommodation to encourage overseas visitors.

HOW WILL IT PLAY OUT? The Queensland Government intends to go to the market by year’s end for expressions of interest. This will begin 12 months of planning, including several rounds of community consultation. Tourism minister Kate Jones has pledged there will be no extra poker machine licences.

WHERE ARE THE FAVOURED SITES?

● State Government land south of the Sea World car park is considered one of the best vacant commercial sites in the city. It could be linked to a new ferry service. ASF was to build a hotel there until the integrated resort project was canned. Stumbling block is a three-level height limit.

● Carey Park fronting Australia Fair is currently the most talked-up site. This parcel is up to 6ha. Opposition to it if it impacts on the nearby bowls club and croquet club. State Government-owned.

● The Star of the Sea north of Nerang St. This parcel has attracted interested from developers. They have knocked on the door of area councillor Dawn Crichlow. Is close to light rail, looks right across the Broadwater. Privately owned.

● The Vomitron site in Surfers Paradise. Also privately owned. There is a council car park nearby which could be amalgamated to make the site bigger. Developers have always considered it perfect for highrise resort to include casino and convention facilities. Light rail at front door.
