COAST MUM-PRENEURS HELP MAMMAS FIND THEIR TRIBE

- KIRSTIN PAYNE

A NEW approach to motherhood launched by a Gold Coast mum has grown into a national sensation.

Mama Tribe, an online community that supports and connects mums in their local areas, has exploded across the country with 30,000 members nationwide – 2000 locally – along with on-theground ambassadors at 50 locations across Australia.

The group empowers and supports women to adjust to the new stage in their lives through social inclusion with face-to-face meet ups.

The brainchild of Gold Coast mother Nikki McCahon and her friend Haley Finlayson, the movement was launched only a year ago after both experienced loneliness and isolation after the birth of their children.

“After the birth, everyone goes and you are left at home by yourself. It is particularly hard for first-time mums, especially when you go from full-time work,” Ms McCahon said. “We wanted to build a model much like the ancient tribes where parenting is shared with the entire community – hence the name Mama Tribe”.

“Since we launched we have heard so many stories of mothers in need of a support network at some of the most trying times in their life.”

The development consultant says the community advocacy has become her passion and full-time job.

Utilising the skills of members, a senior management team has been established with professionals offering marketing, PR and digital expertise. More than 130 volunteer “ambassadors’’ have hosted events across Australia and brought mums together for coffee, play dates, picnics and wine nights.
