Bernie’s still qualifying
BERNARD Tomic is through to the first round of the Moselle Open in France after a hardfought win over Mats Moraing in the qualifiers.
The Australian had to dig deep to make the main draw after winning a first set tiebreaker 8-6 before losing the second set 6-3.
He fought back to win the third 6-3 to set up a first round encounter with wildcard Ugo Humbert today (AEST).
Tomic is ranked No.129 in the world while Frenchman Humbert is 108. After losing to fellow German Matthias Bachinger 7-6 (8-6) 6-3 in qualifying, Yannick Maden took full advantage of his lucky-loser status following the withdrawal of Philipp Kohlschreiber because of fatigue.
Meanwhile, Ash Barty averted a barrage of “friendly fire’’ to close out a first-round 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 win over doubles partner CoCo Vandeweghe at the WTA Tokyo tournament.
