BROTHER BATTLES

- TOM BOSWELL tom.boswell@news.com.au

STEPHEN Thynne spent the final five minutes of last year’s QAFL grand final following younger brother Tom around the field.

Tom, 22, didn’t have the footy for the majority of it but Stephen, 25, wanted to make sure he was the first to embrace his brother when the siren sounded to confirm their premiership win.

“(Tom) was following the ball around and I was following him around,” Thynne laughed.

“I had to make sure I was the first one to jump on him.

“It was a pretty amazing feeling to win with my brother. It’s something we have always wanted to do and it was really good to tick it off last year.

“The focus is now on going back-to-back.”

As fate had it, Tom had the last kick of the 2017 grand final and as the siren sounded with the footy in mid-air. It was a behind but it didn’t matter to the Thynnes.

The duo will aim to go back-to-back when Palm Beach Currumbin play Broadbeach in the grand final this Saturday at Leyshon Park in Yeronga. They will be one of two sets of brothers to compete in the grand final for Palm Beach Currumbin, with Jed, 23, and Zac, 21, Harrison hoping to win their first senior flag together.

Siblings Jackson and Blake Emblem will also both be involved on the day, with the former to play seniors and the latter to compete for a flag with the club’s reserves side.

Palm Beach’s club motto is ’Local, Loyal, Family’ and the links for the last run deep.

Development coach Jake Goody’s father played in the 1985 Palm Beach Currumbin premiership side, while senior player Tyler Cornish’s mother Anne is the current club president.

Zac Harrison missed out on playing in the 2017 grand final with Palm Beach Currumbin due to a quad injury.

Harrison said he felt mixed emotions watching the side win the flag but was happy to get a chance to play with the team and brother Jed this year.

“It will be huge this weekend,” Harrison said.

“I missed out last year through injury so seeing everyone else win hurt a bit. It was good to see them win but it was hard to watch.

“It will be good playing with my brother and the rest of the boys and it would be pretty special to win it.

“After last year Jed and I spoke about it after I missed the game.

“We talked about us winning it together and we could now do that.”

WE TALKED ABOUT US WINNING IT TOGETHER AND WE COULD NOW DO THAT. PALM BEACH’S ZAC HARRISON
