PINK UP AND HELP CANCER BATTLE

- KATE PARASKEVOS

PARADISE Point local Sally Spencer has had a two-year rollercoaster ride battling breast cancer.

At only 36 years old, she was in the 5 per cent minority of young women diagnosed with the often fatal disease.

Now, after finishing treatment, Mrs Spencer wants to raise money and help support other local women battling the disease by taking an active role at the Pink Ribbon Cup race day tomorrow.

“It was definitely a terrible few years. I had all the chemo and treatment I could,” she said.

“But for me, even on the day I was diagnosed I chose to treat it like a job.

“That meant keeping up with daily routines. I even worked as I was receiving my chemo.”

Mrs Spencer wants to remind women they are not alone in dealing with their cancer.

The event is expected to attract thousands of racegoers who will be donning pink to raise funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

The Pink Ribbon Cup will also have a range of off-track activities, including an opportunity to hold the Melbourne Cup Trophy.

The raceday program at the Gold Coast Turf Club runs from 10am6.30pm.
