NEWLY crowned champions Runaway Bay could be a possible 2019 refuge for Kevin Campion after his Tweed Heads side played their last match in the Rugby League Gold Coast competition.

Tweed came within 80 minutes of a maiden RLGC premiership in Campion’s first year of head coaching but were brought unstuck by Bay in a 36-10 grand final scoreline last Sunday. The Piggabeen club announced last month that they would be leaving the Agrade competition to focus on a representative model revolving around Intrust Super Cup, under-20, under-18 and women’s teams.

It leaves Campion without an incumbent role but he is understood to have already been approached by rival clubs, rumoured to include Bay and Southport, to join them in some capacity.

When contacted, the former Maroons enforcer would not be drawn on such advances and said he is not yet sure what his involvement will be next year.

“I really haven’t thought about it to tell you the truth,” he said.

“I just thought I would get this year out of the way.

“(Coaching this year) was something that I wanted to put my hand up for and experience it but it is a big commitment at any level, particularly at Agrade level on the Gold Coast.

“I’ll just play it by ear at the moment. I’ll see what happens.”

Reflecting on Tweed’s season, the 47-year-old said he was proud of their efforts to dig deep when short on numbers, including a game against Tugun in which they started with only 14 players and finished with 12 on the field.

Campion credited captain Josh Harvey for making his life easier; the veteran forward told the Bulletin he is keen to play on next season but is uncertain what colours he will wear.

“Quite frankly I am having nightmares about pre-season,” Harvey said.
