Keegan eyes dual titles
District pairs next after success in singles final
BROADBEACH’S Julie Keegan has won the Gold Coast Tweed Ladies District Singles, defeating Joan Tennant (Tweed) 25-16 in the final.
Keegan overcame Anne Russell (Musgrave Hill) in one semi-final while Tennant defeated Brenda Balchin (Helensvale) in the other.
An interested spectator at the final was former Australian rugby league and union rep- resentative and recent Survivor reality-TV contestant Mat Rogers, who was with mates at the Gold Coast Bowls and Community Club in Broadbeach Waters.
The women’s district pairs will be held this weekend at Coolangatta. Keegan will be looking to win the double with clubmate Katelyn Inch.
Nominations for the men’s district pairs close on Friday
■ BOWLS Australia recently announced the finalists for their 2018 awards night, which will be held at the Mantra on View in Surfers Paradise on Thursday, October 25.
Gold Coast finalists include: Jake Fehlberg (Burleigh Heads) for Disability Bowler of the Year, Jessie Cottell (Helensvale) for Under-18 Female Bowler of the Year, Kelvin Kerkow (Tweed Heads) for Coach of the Year, Geoff O’Meagher (Helensvale) for Volunteer of the Year and I am a finalist for the International Bowler of the Year.
The Australian Jackaroos Commonwealth Games team will also be honoured on the awards night.
■ HELENSVALE’S Division 1 men’s pennant champions beat Victoria Point on Sunday at Beenleigh in the Zone 1 play- off. Victoria Point started strongly going out to an early lead until the half way mark.
Helensvale then started to lift across the three rinks and finished strongly to win 60-48.
Aron Sherriff and I both won our rinks against Jade Groenwege and Sean Baker respectively while Nathan Rice’s rink lost narrowly to Brad Coleman.
Helensvale now play in the state pennant finals at Tweed Heads on November 10-11.
■ KEVIN Anderson (Broadbeach) won the prestigious Mad Dog Singles in Launceston Tasmania at the weekend.
Anderson defeated clubmate and Scottish countryman Ryan Burnett in the last round to win; Broadbeach’s Katelyn Inch ran fifth and Tweed’s Scott DeJongh was sixth.
■ JESSIE Cottell teamed with Brendon Egan of Enoggera to win the Pine Rivers Junior Senior Day on Sunday. The junior carnival started yesterday.
■ BEENLEIGH’S Dale McWhinney-Shillington travelled to Innisfail over the weekend and won their annual men’s fours carnival with local North Queensland players.
