Phins’ loss a gain in Yorkshire

- CONNOR O’BRIEN

SURFERS Paradise rugby hooker Lachie Currie will have the perfect way to move on from a case of grand final heartbreak.

Currie departed for England last night, little more than a week after the Dolphins’ loss to Griffith University Colleges to begin his tenure with Yorkshire Carnegie in the secondtier English Championship.

The Championship season kicked off at the start of the month but Yorkshire allowed the 21-year-old, who they are believed to be interested in as a possible run-on player, to see out his club season and regain match fitness after copping a broken jaw 10 weeks ago.

Currie has previously represented Canada and the under-20 Western Force side and this latest opportunity presents him with a huge stepping stone towards his goal.

“I know a lot of players dream of playing for the Wallabies or they want to play in like the Scottish jersey,” he said.

“For me, I just want to be able to look at myself in the mirror every morning and just be proud of how I am playing and how I have developed and live my dream.

“My dream has always been to be a professional rugby player and to play at the best standard I possibly can.

“It’s going to be a great opportunity to get to be with good coaching, good players and a great program too to help me develop.

“I have a lot of family over in Scotland so I get to hang out with them as well.

“I’m glad I have done it at a young age. A lot of people do it when they are 28 or 29 and then they struggle with it.

“At least with me, I have still got ages – I haven’t hit muscle maturity yet.”

Currie is on a one-season deal with Yorkshire but hopes to impress enough to secure his long-term future.
