Maximum damage

Bryant and Lynn belt SA in JLT Cup flogging

- BEN HORNE

CHRIS Lynn hit a stunning maiden one-day hundred for Queensland but it was the blitz of rising Gold Coast talent Max Bryant that turned as many heads.

Australia’s World Cup defence is in a state of disarray but Lynn’s 64-ball demolition of South Australia in Sydney yesterday showed he could be the saviour in England next year.

Lynn smashed eight sixes at Hurstville Oval, including one on to the road that might have nearly eclipsed the famous Big Bash maximum he once launched on to the roof of the Gabba.

It’s understood selectors have pencilled Lynn in as their preferred No.3 in oneday cricket, believing he can instantly bring Australia back up to speed.

It seems incredible that yesterday was Lynn’s first 50over century but from Australia’s point of view the timing was perfect.

“I haven’t had a question

directly (about the World Cup) but I know what I’ve got to do is just score runs and look after my body,” he said.

“It’s not reckless cricket, it’s fear-free cricket. They are calculated risks.”

Lynn received superb support from under-19s star on the rise Bryant, who smashes 71 off 32 balls opening the innings for Queensland in their comprehensive seven-wicket win over South Australia with 87 balls remaining.

Bryant could be another to watch for selectors looking to up the ante in one-day cricket given David Warner is on the sidelines.
