SUNSETS SHED LIGHT ON FUTURE

THE Gold Coast Sunsets have been crowned the AFL Queensland Under-17 Youth Girls State Champions for 2018.

The Sunsets’ win is a positive sign for the Gold Coast AFL club, which will field a team in the AFL Women’s competitio­n from 2020.

The Gold Coast beat the North Queensland Kookaburra­s in a wetweather grand final in Maroochydo­re yesterday.

Queensland’s next generation of AFL stars were on display at the AFL Queensland youth championsh­ips, which also featured under-14 boys and girls divisions.

For the first time, different age groups were combined into one event over five days on the Sunshine Coast.

More than 500 players representi­ng teams from Queensland, NSW and Papua New Guinea took part in the event.
