Stab victim scared to seek justice

- SALLY COATES

A MAN who was allegedly stabbed in the neck and body by a group of teens on a crime rampage is too frightened to make a statement to police.

The 39-year-old did not want to speak on the record yesterday, telling the Bulletin he was not pressing charges.

A family friend said it was due to the man fearing the teens would be back on the streets soon.

Member for Surfers Paradise John-Paul Langbroek, whose office is less than a kilometre from where the attack occurred, said he could understand the man’s lack of faith in the juvenile judicial process.

Police are alleging that as well as attacking the man, the juveniles broke into more than 20 vehicles and stole at least two cars.

Four teens have been charged over the spree through Bundall, Benowa, Surfers Paradise, Varsity Lakes, Tugun and Tweed on Sunday night and early Monday.

“I can understand his reticence to comment and his fear of retribution,” Mr Langbroek said yesterday.

“What does this say about our system, which seems to be completely weighted to the perpetrator and not the victim?”
