TK Maxx brings discount brands to Upper Coomera

- ALISTER THOMSON

DISCOUNT department store TK Maxx opens the doors to its Upper Coomera outlet today as part of an expansion into the Gold Coast retail market.

The North American chain, which is known as TJ Maxx in the US, now has four stores on the Gold Coast after earlier converting three Trade Secret stores at Burleigh Waters, Helensvale and Southport.

The new TK Maxx store has 2000sq m of space and is located at the Home Consortium Centre at the corner of Days Rd and Old Coach Rd.

Yesterday, Spotlight, which sells fabrics, crafts, and homewares, opened a 2500sq m shop at the centre, which is currently also home to Choice The Discount Store, Supercheap Auto and EMF Performance Centre.

Petbarn is due to open at another space and the two remaining tenancies are under

offer. TK Maxx spokeswoman Clare Willenberg said the company had decided to open another outlet after a strong response to its existing stores.

“We were keen to expand our presence in this market and the new Home Co development presented an exciting opportunity for us,” she said.

TK Maxx has not announced any new plans for further Gold Coast outlets.

Privately-owned Home Consortium completed a $700 million purchase from Woolworths of the failed Masters sites in August, 2016.

Earlier this year it opened a shopping centre at Bundall, which features Nick Scali and Goodlife Health Club as tenants.

The ex-Masters Upper Coomera warehouse is being leased from veteran develop Norm Rix.

The property has a gross lettable area of 11,067sq m and 374 parking spaces.
