A POLICEMAN got a lot more than he bargained for when trying to make an arrest at Banora Point. While engaged in a scuffle with a suspect, the cop received what is colloquially known as a “squirrel grip”.

The officer was left in a lot of pain while the suspect was left in a jail cell.

A 24-year-old man was charged and is due to appear in court on outstanding warrants..

A POLICE officer was ‘squirrel gripped’ on Friday night as he and other officers tried to arrest a 24-year-old man.

The man was trying to escape from police at a Banora Point home about 7.30pm when they arrested him.

Police said the man had six outstanding arrest warrants.

He was in a unit on the second storey of the unit block when police arrived.

“Upon the male becoming aware of the police presence he jumped from the veranda into the neighbouring yard,” a police statement said.

“He jumped into the pool and swam to the far side.

“At that location he has attempted to run from the pool.”

Police said a violent confrontation then took place.

“The male punched officers, grabbed hold of the testicles of one of the officers and kicked a number of police,” the police statement said.

“He was eventually restrained and taken to the Tweed Heads Police Station.”

The man was charged in relation to the warrants, which total 19 offences, as well as breaking, entering and stealing, two assaulting policecharges and four resisting police charges.

He was refused bail and is due to appear in the Tweed Heads Local Court tomorrow.
