CLUB ON A MISSION TO FUEL SCHOOL KIDS

-

THIS group of Victoria Towers members from Southport have formed their own version of the Breakfast Club – feeding children, not holding detention like the John Hughes classic film.

Retired residents who still have a lot of love to give provide kids from Musgrave Hill State School with a delicious breakfast feast once a week.

Donating Weet-Bix, Vegemite for toast, baked bean jaffles, lots of milk for Milo and bread from a local bakery, the Breakfast Club meets once a week to give the kids a beaut homemade breakfast to fuel their day.

Co-ordinator Le Anne Polwarth said the most important aspect was to build relationships with the kids.

“There is a roster of volunteers who help out,” she said. “We’ve had parents bake biscuits to thank us and the school is very appreciative too.

“It’s fostering that relationship for many kids who don’t have grandparents or that kind of nurturing influence in their lives, and to give them some breakfast for a good start to their day.

“We have so many dedicated volunteers who give up their time to spend feeding the kids and it’s a beautiful thing.”

John and Theresa Collins from BC Bakery at Ashmore donate bread each week.

The Breakfast Club would love any community donations of milk, bread or other breakfast goods.
