Ex-boxer in court over club melee

- NICHOLAS MCELROY

A FORMER Commonwealth Games boxer is alleged to have sparked a brawl in a Gold Coast nightclub by urinating on the floor moments after Usain Bolt hit the DJ decks.

Scottish boxer Stephen Wallace Lavelle is charged with allegedly assaulting Kortney Rykers Hollier and Bilal McCracken Strickland, both 18, at SinCity Nightclub in the early hours of April 12. Lavelle has pleaded not guilty.

Yestereday the Southport Magistrates Court was told Rykers Hollier had her nose broken in the melee about an hour after being offered Red Bull and whiskey in a private booth at the club with Bolt.

Her cousin, Mr McCracken Strickland, received 15 stitches after Lavelle allegedly “glassed” him with a bottle.

The court was told the melee began after Ms Rykers Hollier and her friend Amy Wallace felt what they said was urine splash on them as they danced in the packed club.

They said they saw Lavelle standing about a metre behind them and liquid on the floor when they turned around.

Ms Wallace said she saw Lavelle put his penis back inside his pants.

Ms Rykers Hollier then told Mr McCracken Strickland, who confronted Lavelle, saying “you putrid (expletive)”. The former boxer denied urinating on the floor. CCTV footage played in court showed both 18-year-olds being hit in the face and McCracken Strickland jumping over a barrier toward Lavelle.

Lavelle was a bronze medallist in the 91kg boxing at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014. He did not have any official association with the Gold Coast event.

The two day hearing is set to continue today.
