Our city council is making heavy going of light issue

- JEANETTE AND TERRY CAMP

THE discussion concerning the acceptability of the lighting being installed on the Tugun to Bilinga Oceanway needs to be brought to light (no pun intended).

The Gold Coast City Council has opted for a change of bollard lights from those originally installed, some of which remain, to a directional light units of similar structure to the original units, but giving light (ie: direction) towards the Oceanway pathway.

On checking on the specifications of the manufacture of these bollard lights, (SolarBollardLighting.com), these new lights appear to give a maximum radial distance of 3.5m in the designated angular direction.

As the bollards are located about one metre from the path and at approximately 12m intervals, it is apparent that they are not suitable for the requirement of safe lighting.

It appears the council is installing these bollard lights as construction continues north.

The expense of this folly must be taken into account when the council is aware of the inadequacy of what is being installed as to what is required and already exists further south of Bilinga.

Tall lighting (solar motion sensing) has been installed in Wyberba Parklands along the Oceanway – the Tugun SLSC is in this park – from Toolona to Wyberba streets, Tugun.

Other than the duration of operational time from the batteries, this appears to be a much more acceptable form of lighting and at this stage would not only have a much better economical result but would solve the lighting issue in what would be considered a sensible manner.
