Tweed MP: I’m not weak on crime

- CAMPBELL GELLIE

TWEED MP Geoff Provest is declaring he is tough on crime amid calls from his Labor rival to the contrary.

Outside Tweed Heads Local Court yesterday Mr Provest said anti-bikie laws passed late last month were another example of having a tough stance on crime. His comments come as Labor candidate for Tweed Craig Elliot continues to campaign on adding more police to the district.

“He is misinformed, the figures speak for themselves,” Mr Provest said. “Crime in the Tweed is down 20 per cent in most of the categories.

“We have more than 200 police out on the beat, six new general duties and a regional response squad. These laws strengthen it up further.”

NSW Attorney-General Mark Speakman said these were the toughest anti-bikie laws in Australia.

Under these new laws people who continually associate with convicted criminals face a maximum three years in jail and must prove where they acquired their wealth instead of police having to prove it was illegally obtained.

Individuals can also be banned from public events.

“This is about giving police the powers they need to prevent criminal activity,” Mr Speakman said
