BAR CALLS ON LOCAL KNOWLEDGE
ONE of the Gold Coast’s most famous surf shops will be transformed into a giant bar and restaurant under new plans.
The owners of the Local Knowledge surf shop building want to turn the Nobby Beach site into a 1005sq m food and dining venue for up to 200 people.
A new large-scale outdoor atrium will be included on the second floor of the new building, catering for another 120 people.
The building’s existing facade will be completely replaced by an exposed brick and glass appearance similar to establishments in Sydney or Melbourne.
A development application was filed yesterday by developer Wood and Buck Pty Ltd.
The first stage of the project will create the restaurant and bar from the existing surf shop site. Stage 2 will turn the existing car park into a two-storey building consisting of eight offices.
The developers are requesting Gold Coast City Council allow them to operate from 7am to midnight, seven days a week, in line with the operating hours of the nearby Cambus Wallace, Hellenika and Nobbys Arc.
The atrium would operate from 7am to 10pm.
It will be just metres away from the planned route of the Gold Coast light rail’s stage 3A, which will run from Broadbeach to Burleigh Heads.
Construction is expected to begin in 2019 or 2020 with trams running past the proposed venue by 2022. The proposal is part of a wave of new projects being unveiled on the light rail route.
Local Knowledge has been at Nobby Beach for 10 years and is set to close before the building is redeveloped.
The project will go before the council’s planning committee later this year.
