BESTER TO ROLL WITH VERY BEST IN TASSIE

- ALEXANDRA BERNARD

THE Gold Coast will be represented at the Australian Champion of Champions bowls event with Ryan Bester taking to the green today.

The competition, held in Tasmania, sees the best bowlers from every state compete for a spot at the World Champion of Champions at the end of the month.

The Broadbeach bowler has had a tough road to reach this far, having won the club, district and Queensland singles to qualify.

“You can’t lose in about 15 games,” he said.

With a strong line-up waiting for him, Bester is looking forward to giving it all he’s got.

“It’s a really strong field, with some of the players from the other states having represented Australia, but I’m pretty confident,” he said.

Bester took away a silver at the same event in 2016 and is hoping to go one better.

Regardless of how he goes, Bester is proud to have reached this level.

“Just to have won the Club Championship is good – I’m happy,” he said.

Originally from Canada, Bester has a long list of titles behind his name, including a Commonwealth Games silver medal and the 2018 Australian Open Singles title.

He’s been playing for more than 20 years, having picked up his first bowl as a 10-yearold after being pushed into the sport by his older brothers and grandfather.
