Mundine’s weight the early fight

- RIKKI-LEE ARNOLD

THE threat of a potential multimillion-dollar fine means Anthony Mundine is taking his weight loss seriously ahead of his November 30 bout with Jeff Horn.

Mundine made a brief trip to Brisbane this week to kick off the countdown to the River City Rumble at Suncorp Stadium next month.

As part of the clash, which could become the biggest allAustralian fight in history, Horn’s camp have negotiated for strict restrictions on both boxers, with either one to be fined if they are even 100g above their agreed-upon weight.

In the 24 hours before the bout, Mundine and Horn must weigh in at 71kg or under and then again at 75kg or under just hours before the battle.

The duo face fines of $350,000 for the first kilogram that they are overweight and then $500,000 for every kilogram after that.

With the restrictions mostly aimed at the 78kg Mundine, the 43-year-old said it was an unprecedented move, but one he was taking seriously.

The former world champion will begin his diet on Monday and is taking a smart approach to his weight loss after relying on quick fixes in the past.

“I have to eat clean, drink plenty of water, limit my carbs and just be smart about it,” he said.

“There’s too many times that I left it to the last minute. I want to try to do this gradually and make the weight, be strong, look fit, look mean and be ready to go.”
