Ambitions are high at Coomera

COOMERA have outlined their ambitions to become a Greater Brisbane League baseball powerhouse.

The Cubs, who are in just their second year in the GBL, were impressive in splitting their season-opening series on the road against traditional heavyweights Windsor.

Ahead of a home series against Ipswich on Saturday night and Sunday, coach Phil Stockman declared the Cubs were ready to be post-season contenders this summer.

“We wanted to play 500 baseball (win 50 per cent of games) last year,” Stockman said, with Coomera’s 2017-18 record finishing at 16 wins and 19 losses.

“This year it’s no-nonsense: It’s play-offs or nothing. “That’s our No.1 goal.

“It takes time but three or four years in, we want to be the best team in Queensland.”

Coomera have recruited strongly to underpin their play-offs bid.

“We have added around six or seven imports. The majority of the guys have come from the US and a couple from Japan,” said Stockman, who pitched for Atlanta in the majors.

“I think it’s important for a club that’s starting new, you have got to bring in those guys to set the tone for the younger guys and the other locals to see how professionals go about their business every day.”

Reigning champions Surfers Paradise will travel to Carina for games on Friday night and Sunday.
