-

AUSTRALIAN rower Cormac Kennedy-Leverett won bronze in the men’s 500m single sculls at the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires yesterday.

Kennedy-Leverett flew home in 1 min 33.84sec behind gold medallist Ivan Tyshchenko from Ukraine and Belarussian Ivan Bryzna. The Queensland rower was thrilled to medal in front of a packed crowd in the modified 500m format. “I’m really happy with that performance, I raced some awesome guys,” KennedyLeverett said.

The Australian women’s 3x3 basketball team of Rosie Deegan, Alexandra Fowler, Sara-Rose Smith and Ruby Porter opened their campaign with an 11-7 win over the Netherlands and backed up to beat the Czech Republic 15-11.

In the pool, a fifth placing from Lewis Blackburn in the men’s 50m backstroke the best result of the night.

Australia has sent a small team to the event in Buenos Aires, with just eight swimmers donning the green and gold, all of them in their second international event of the year.

Seven of the swimmers took part in the Junior Pan Pacs in Fiji in August, with Kaylee McKeown taking part in the senior Pan Pacs in Tokyo.

McKeown won her semifinal of the 50m backstroke to qualify fastest for the final today (Australian time).
