Plenty of interest in replacing Andrews

- TOM BOSWELL

BRETT Andrews had to be coaxed into becoming head coach of Broadbeach but the legacy left by the respected Cats figure means the QAFL grand finalists won’t have any trouble finding a suitable replacement.

Cats general manager of football Jason Cotter said he had already fielded calls from multiple highly qualified candidates who expressed their interest in taking over as senior coach of the club’s QAFL side.

“Certainly the level of inquiries has been strong,” Cotter said.

“They have been from the local area and at NEAFL and QAFL level. We have been enthused by the level of interest and strength in the candidates who have already touched base.”

Cotter said the popularity of the position was part of the legacy left by Andrews, who took the side to the 2018 grand final where they lost to Palm Beach Currumbin, and his staff.

“We played off in a grand final and the reserves won the premiership,” Cotter said.

“We had the Grogan Medal winner (Blake Erickson) and won the goal kicking in all three grades.

“The club is trending in the right direction. The trick is now to continue to grow.”

Cotter said interest from potential new players had also spiked.

Andrews said he wasn’t surprised by the interest for the coaching role.

“You couldn’t give it away five years ago,” Andrews said.

“Many hands make light work and we have some really good people behind it now so no doubt the next coach will benefit from that work.”
