GOLD COAST TOLD PLENTY MORE RAIN TO COME
THE Gold Coast could “comfortably” reach its monthly average of rainfall by tonight after a deluge across the weekend.
Parts of the Coast received more than 60mm of rain on Saturday, just 30mm shy of the 90mm mark needed to top out the October average.
To break a record, the area would need to receive 127mm, according to Weatherzone meteorologists.
But forecaster Tom Hough said this week’s wet weather, and looking ahead to next week, suggested the city would reach 90mm.
“There’s plenty more month left to reach that,” he said.
“Today we could see another 10-20mm. So it’s looking like we’ll reach that monthly total comfortably.”
He warned a severe weather warning had remained in place which was seeing gusts of up to 60km/h – gale force – across coastal shores in the region.
The winds are expected to ease tomorrow.
On Saturday night, Springbrook received 61mm of rain, the highest total across the Gold Coast, with Tallebudgera close behind on 46mm.
A spokesman for Surf Life Saving Queensland said there had been an influx of blue bottles on the high tide on Gold Coast beaches.
While many weekend events were washed out, street entertainers were singing and dancing in the rain at Currumbin for the annual Buskers by the Creek festival, at Winder’s Park.
