FIJIAN FLAIR BRIGHTENS UP BEACH RUGBY TITLES

- EMMA GREENWOOD @EmmaGreenwood12

FLAMBOYANT Fiji have taken out the Beach Rugby Australia title after becoming the accidental heroes of the inaugural event.

The constant rain that forced the cancellation of most sporting fixtures in southeast Queensland this weekend proved a boon for the Beach Rugby Australia carnival at Kirra after the cancellation of the Noosa Sevens left teams looking for action. Organisers made late changes to the Beach Rugby draw to allow Fiji and other teams access to the tournament and reaped the dividends with the kings of entertaining rugby wowing the crowds.

“I’ve done a lot of events before but I’ve never done an event under these conditions with lots of spectators and not one complaint,” organiser and Beach Rugby Australia director Peter Hickey said. “Everyone can’t wait for next year and Fiji are talking about coming back with a whole busload.

“Next year we’ll run early and avoid all the Rugby Sevens tournaments.”

Fiji’s Cavaliers International won the final against Brisbane’s Bam Bam 8-3. The open women’s division was won by Brisbane’s Red Heavies, who beat Maroochydore Swans 6-2, while St Laurence’s College old boys team HP Locals beat Seagulls 5-4 in the men’s colts.

Bond Uni produced one of the most entertaining and skilful matches of the day, winning the under-15s girls division 4-3.
