GAMES FLAVOUR AMONG SPORTS STAR HOPES

- EMMA GREENWOOD emma.greenwood@news.com.au

A QUARTET of Commonwealth Games gold medallists have been announced as finalists for the 2018 Gold Coast Sports Star of the Year.

Organisers gave a glimpse of the quality of the field expected for the 51st annual award when they named cyclist Katrin Garfoot, boxer Skye Nicolson, marathon runner Michael Shelley and diver Domonic Bedggood as finalists for the award.

While the final field has not yet been determined and the award won’t be announced until February – the avalanche of gold from local athletes at their home Games

encouraged organisers to give a sneak peek of a final field that is expected to be one of the most star-studded in history.

Yesterday’s launch also recognised Hall of Fame inductee Emma Snowsill who was unable to be present at the awards dinner earlier this

year after giving birth to her second child, daughter Sienna, a younger sister for Lucca.

“This is my hometown, I love coming back here,” said the 2008 Olympic triathlon gold medallist who is now based in Noosa.

“The Gold Coast gave me everything, it provided me with these sorts of awards and accolades and it was the most amazing backdrop and breeding ground for not only myself but so many other world-class athletes.

“(Entering) the Hall of Fame is not something you think about when you start out in your sporting career, as a young Gold Coaster, you’re just very proud to represent where you come from and do what you love.

“It’s amazing to be inducted amongst the many great names that have gone before me.”
