Future Reds star to line up for Country
GOLD Coast rugby fans will get a glimpse of the Reds’ newest teen sensation when Queensland Country take semi-final footy to Bond University this weekend.
The National Rugby Championship defending premiers will face the Western Force at Bond on Sunday for a place in the decider.
Among the names lining up for Country will be 18year-old back-rower Harry Wilson, who has just signed a two-year Super Rugby deal with the Queensland Reds.
“I’ve kept a close eye on Harry’s progress this season in premier rugby and with Queensland Country and he continues to work hard on his game which is pleasing,” Reds coach Brad Thorn said.
Having entered 2018 simply hoping to gain experience at Queensland Premier Rugby level with Brothers in Brisbane, a dream year has eventuated for Wilson.
“It’s an amazing feeling … I am very happy and honoured to be joining the Reds and really look forward to starting next year,” the 106kg machine said.
He credited the chance to step into the Country environment for helping him secure a Super Rugby contract.
“It has definitely been a big step up, being a professional program. I haven’t really been used to that,” Wilson said.
Hooker Efi Ma’afu and winger Will Eadie have also scored one-year deals with the Reds.
As for Sunday, Country will look to turn the tables on the Force after the latter won a 42-40 thriller at Bond last month.
The Fijian Drua and Canberra Vikings will square off in the other NRC semi-final.
